Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

·       What should my student wear for the audition?

Students should dress to impress in clean, professional, and performance-ready attire. No sandals, Crocs, or shorts. They should also bring appropriate dance clothing and shoes for the group dance audition.

·       Can my child use a song or monologue they’ve done before?

Yes! Students are welcome to use a piece they’ve performed before, especially if it shows them at their best. Just make sure it’s polished, age-appropriate, and fits within the one-minute time limit. At Northwest Theatre Lab, our philosophy is: work smarter, not harder.

·       Do scholarships cover full tuition or just partial?

Most scholarships awarded are partial scholarships. However, several full scholarships are available depending on the program and award criteria. Our largest scholarships are typically reserved for students with demonstrated financial need.

·       How will I know what the scholarship can be used for?

Each scholarship is designated for a specific use, such as Lab class tuition, Rehearsal & Production seasons, or Company and Rising Stars program fees. Some awards are more flexible and can be applied toward any Northwest Theatre Lab tuition or fee. Award details will be clearly outlined in your notification.

·       If my student doesn’t get a scholarship, can we still participate in programs?

Absolutely! Scholarships help make programs more accessible, but they’re not required for participation. We welcome all students to enroll, and payment plans are available for most programs if needed.

·       Do I need to bring a headshot and resume?

Yes! A headshot and resume help our adjudicators remember who you are after auditions and give context to your training and performance history. Your headshot doesn’t need to be professional—a recent, clear photo is great. Your resume should list shows, roles, classes, and any special skills.

·       Can I audition if I’m only interested in one specific program?

Yes. Just indicate that in your application. Some scholarships are tied to specific classes or productions, so we’ll use your audition to match you with awards that fit your goals.

·       Will I be considered even if I don’t have a lot of experience?

Absolutely. We’re looking for potential, passion, and commitment—not just past credits. Everyone has to start somewhere, and we love seeing new performers step into the spotlight.

·       What if I feel nervous or mess up during my audition?

It’s okay! Everyone gets nervous. We’re not expecting perfection—we’re looking for growth and potential. Take a deep breath and keep going. That resilience tells us a lot, too.
